TreeGivers Newsletter

Nigel Manley has joined our team as of March 2003 to add a new dimension to TreeGivers. Nigel was educated in the UK and earned his degree in Agricultural Management at Reading University, about 1 hour north of London. His interests lay not only in agriculture, but also in the natural world. After coming to the US in 1985 he took a great interest in his natural surroundings working in Minnesota and then New Hampshire. As an avid outdoorsman northern New Hampshire suited his interests and his sustainable harvest philosophy. Learning about conservation by managing properties for a leading conservation group and spending hours in the woods Nigel is at home in with the natural world that he feels privileged to enjoy.

Each month Nigel will write a newsletter, "Nigel's Natural Notes", and will try to answer questions that you send to us by e-mail.

Nigel's Natural Notes, a step into the outdoors!

"Earth Day, Every Day"-- Make tree planting a way of life-

"We need to get away from thinking that tree planting is a one day event," says Rob Pearson of TreeGivers.

As we progress through the summer season we have a tendency to forget about tree planting as we watch everything grow around us. Here in Northern New Hampshire the season is so compressed that evergreens that started to grow in May are hardening off in July and we are busy pruning them. It is easy to forget that spring will soon be here again and a new crop of trees must be planted.

Our national network of TreeGiver professional arborists, foresters, nurserymen and volunteers were busy planting this season, with over 4,000 seedlings in PA alone! The first group that we contracted with in 1981, NH's own Daniel Webster Boy Scout Council, was at it again this spring, planting tree seedlings in southern New Hampshire.

Our newest affiliated partner is Four Seasons Tree Care of WA State. Four Seasons President Scott Selby knows the value of trees that his company sometimes has to remove. With this in mind he started an affiliation with TreeGivers to have a tree planted on public land in WA for each tree his company had to remove. "This is a great partnership. Scott is a forward thinker and is very much in tune with the environment," stated Pearson, President of TreeGivers.

Merrill Lynch had a unique way to recognize the accomplishment of each of their sponsored INC Magazine Top 100 Inner City Corporations. They presented each award winner with a personalized, matted framed TreeGivers Certificate of Planting, representing a young seedling to be planted in their respective state during the next planting season. This environmentally sound gift was well received by the award winners and demonstrated Merrill Lynch's commitment to supporting Inner City businesses and the environment.

We are beginning to plan for our Fall planting season and again look forward to planting trees on behalf of our benevolent customers. We truly appreciate serving their tree planting needs and wish them all well throughout the rest of 2003.
