Jewish National Fund - Plant Trees in Israel

Israel's forests and parks were not always there. The first settlers in the country found a desolate land with absolutely no shaded areas. Today, Israel is the only country in the world with more trees at the start of the 21st century than at the start of the 20th century.

This resulted from almost a century of tireless efforts led by Keren Kayemeth Leisrael-Jewish National Fund. During this time period it has planted more than 200 million trees on more than 225,000 acres throughout Israel. It serves as Israel's exclusive forestry agency.

The aims of afforestation have changed with the times. In the past it came to meet immediate needs, such as defense of extensive land tracts and soil conservation. Today, it serves a wide range of purposes, such as rolling back the desert, improving environmental quality, upgrading range lands, providing habitat for wildlife and recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

Mission of Jewish National Fund

Mission: Nearly one hundred years ago, Jewish National Fund was created with the singular task of reclaiming the Land of Israel. While instrumental in this process of realizing this dream, the challenge of preserving and developing the land of Israel grows with each day. To meet this challenge, JNF, with the support of hundreds of thousands of people who identify with this mission, invests its time and efforts in six Action Areas that will allow them to continue this successful work.

Action Areas:

Water

Through programs such as reservoir development, water recycling, and riverbed restoration, JNF is working to make sure that Israel is never depleted of this most important natural resource.

Ecology & Afforestation

JNF is best known for planting trees in Israel, but this is only one facet of our ecological program. In addition to planting over 210 million trees, JNF preserves the ecological balance by fire prevention and safety, land reclamation, development of agricultural infrastructure and soil conservation.

Tourism & Recreation

By building "comfort zones", maintaining archaeological sites, developing beaches and making forests accessible, JNF improves the quality of life for Israelis and makes Israel accessible for millions of tourists who visit Israel annually.

Community Development

The redemption of the land is far from over, and with your help, we can turn visions into reality. But it takes more than the desire for community development - it takes an enormous commitment of resources on all levels to make development of roads, parks and infrastructure feasible.

Research and Development

The road of progress is paved with intellectual rigor and serious research. Research is expensive, but no one has yet found a cheaper way of making progress. Through research efforts in many different forums, JNF is making an impact on Israel's future.

Education

Ensuring that our children inherit our commitment and are part of our history is the key to laying the foundation for a strong and vibrant community. JNF's programs in Israel and the United States ensure that commitment.

"It is not the child that gives to Keren Kayemeth, but rather, the Fund that gives to the child... a foothold and a lofty ideal of all the days of his life."
